It's weird how many of my journal entries or blogs I want to start with the phrase ‘a luta continua'. The struggle continues. It seems anything worth writing about comes about or is born out of struggle.
This morning I had breakfast with John, Brent and Dirk- three UJ architecture students. Two years ago we walked on the site where Futeco Park is now developing. We were struggling through the bush, itching like hell from the ‘Buffalo Beans'. We tried to grasp how the land looked, if it would be suitable for development. It looked remarkably like nothing! Dreaming felt speculative and difficult.
Today, after the access roads, borehole, change rooms and the levelling of first field, we look back in amazement. To a stranger it might not look like much, but we who sweated and squeezed our bank accounts, we view it as the Mona Lisa of development works!
The journey defines the end product. The people we do it with define the outcome and impact it has on our lives. Infrastructure, as all other development projects is only an excuse for people to connect- with others, with themselves and with their future selves.
Dreaming and struggling has defined and developed me more than any formal education. I'm so grateful that I have real people to share the journey with.
I dream: every day.
I doubt: every day.
So, if something happens as we imagined it, I feel ‘like a wow' (to quote Palinga).
