Today 20 Under 14 kids accompanied me and a senior player, Alex, to Futeco Park. The mission was, instead of playing a game, to pick up all the small stones on the field and to remove wild grass and weeds. As the kids started to clean, one of the local boys (pictured above in red shirt) that lives there in the very rural part of town, aproached and started helping, without talking to anyone. At the end of the day this boy had gathered a substantial heap of stones, so we invited him for a colddrink and biscuits. As he entered the dressing room, I asked him to tell the other 20 kids his name and age. Then the young boy just stood there, not getting a word out. The other kids started laughing and the boy, despite his best effort to stay in control, started crying. The laughter quickly stopped and we gave him another chance: "Eu sou Domingos, tenho 13 anos" And our team clapped hands and Domingos joined in the festivities. Driving back one of the kids told me: "these kids in the rural huts never talk, they never speak in front of people, even in their homes they don't get a chance to talk". And so I realised, despite our formal efforts to clean our field and the life-skills exercises we did while there, the miracle of the day occured unplanned, as a rural boy after crying, got a chance to tell other kids what his name was and how old he is.
